Last week we talked about what happens when your job isn’t a good fit. So this week let’s explore taking the job that does suit your personality to the next level.

Some days you soar through the day. What did you do that day? If you love solving mechanical problems, maybe you worked with your team and solved a bottle-neck. If you love to close a deal, maybe you got that multi-year order you have been working on with your team for 6 months. But, if you are that VP of Sales who just closed that deal this morning, you might be reviewing sales calls with your direct reports and by 5:30, your head is pounding and all that good feeling has gone away.

You can’t run away form the parts of your job that feel like a grind to you. SO, what can you do? Well, think this one through. Can you delegate those tasks that for a big picture person are deadly? (Details might be your tough area.) If not, then you need to make an appointment with yourself to do them, and no breaking commitments about doing it when something more exciting comes along. You might be tired emotionally from doing it, but you also just put in place a success strategy.

For those who hate the big picture stuff, get a buddy who loves to brainstorm and calendar ½ hour with them to run by your ideas. They will talk all day. Keep them to ½ hour.

And, give yourself time to recover from the tough stuff. You don’t have to justify it to anyone else. You are responsible for managing your emotions. Take good care of yourself.
