If you read this blog, you probably have hot water, a roof over your head, and more electronic devices than you have plugs for in your bedroom.

We are so fortunate. We aren’t suffering a war in our homeland. We are not refugees. We live in a democracy and have the mightiest military on the planet.

I want to honor those young women and men who are protecting our economic as well as political interests. It is the US Navy that keeps our supply chains safe all over the world. It is our young -average age 19 – who staff those aircraft carriers with a crew of 6000. It is our volunteer military who fought town by town in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are also fighting distant wars from command centers in Colorado or places other than an actual battlefield.

They risk their lives for us. They get the brunt of our complicated political and military strategies.

They protect our right to be mean spirited, snarky and self-absorbed. They show us discipline, working as a team and faith in our system. On this Memorial weekend, I’d like to raise a toast to those who died for us. And, those who live with all the memories and horrors they can’t forget.
